The UAE is a country that is known for its high standards of safety and comfort on the roads. Traffic rules are strictly regulated and compliance is mandatory for all road users. Find out what regulations apply on local roads and what drivers should expect.
Right-hand traffic
Due to the large number of traffic circles, all vehicles must drive on the right side of the road. But even so, the rule of obstruction on the left applies. And at intersections, those driving in a circle have priority.
Speed limits
There are strict speed limits on UAE roads that must be adhered to. For example, within the city the limit is 60 km/h, and outside the city – 100 km/h. You can exceed the speed limit and not get a fine by a maximum of 20 km/h, this rule applies in all emirates except Abu Dhabi. Speed control is automated, it is carried out by radars, which are located every 1-2 km.
Fines
The local system of fines is quite strict. For seemingly insignificant violations, you can be issued a large fine. Their size varies from 400 to 5000 AED. For example, be prepared to pay 400 AED for not wearing a seatbelt, for stopping on the highway without a reason – 1000 AED, and for using a phone – 800 AED. Exceeding the speed limit by 10 km/h from the allowed speed will cost you 400 AED, and overtaking on the side of the road – 1000 AED. Drunk driving will cost you a fine of 30,000 AED or three years in prison. The detailed list can be found on the official RTA website.
Road Signs
Most road signs use both official Arabic and English to make them understandable to foreigners. The signs themselves are often set up near intersections, so you will have little time to consider your maneuver.
Roads in the UAE are of excellent quality, so a trip to any distance will bring you positive emotions. The main thing is to be careful on the road and learn the local rules in advance to avoid problems.
